Nelson Mandela University is set to host a powerful gathering of artists, innovators, and thought leaders this Friday, 17 October, as TEDxNelsonMandelaUniversity 2025 unfolds under the theme “Redefining Creative Arts.”

Organised by the university’s Innovation Office, the event places the creative arts at the heart of its STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) strategy — reaffirming the role of artistic expression as a catalyst for innovation, identity, and impact.

A platform for bold ideas and cultural transformation

Hosted at the Nelson Mandela University Business School Auditorium, the TEDx event will bring together a dynamic line-up of speakers and performers whose work reflects the changing role of creativity in a rapidly evolving world.

In an age marked by digital transformation, global interconnectivity, and social change, the creative arts are no longer confined to traditional forms. Instead, they are being redefined across disciplines — merging with science, technology, education, and entrepreneurship to reshape culture and society.

Diverse voices shaping tomorrow’s creativity

This year’s TEDxNelsonMandelaUniversity features leading voices from across the arts and cultural sectors:

  • Unathi Lutshaba, Executive Director of the South African Cultural Observatory (SACO), will speak on “Measuring the Pulse of African Creative Economies,” offering insights into how the continent’s cultural industries are evolving.

  • Laduma Ngxokolo, internationally acclaimed fashion designer and founder of MaXhosa Africa, will take audiences through “From Xhosa Beadwork to Global Fashion Runways.”

  • Dr Gcina Mhlophe, legendary author and storyteller, will explore “How Writing Influences Cultural Traditions.”

  • Professor Pitika Ntuli will reflect on “Sculpting Spirit and History from Bone and Stone,” drawing from his acclaimed sculptural work.

  • Zolani Mahola, celebrated musician and performer, will present “Singing Stories of Healing and Hope.”

  • Hlomhla Dandala, actor and creative, will examine “Acting Our Stories into Existence,” showcasing how performance can shape personal and collective identity.

The programme will open with a special performance and continue throughout the day with a series of talks and artistic interludes that aim to both challenge and inspire.

Connecting creativity, innovation, and impact

“TEDxNelsonMandelaUniversity is more than a showcase of ideas; it’s an ecosystem where innovation, creativity, and transformation intersect,” said Professor Azwinndini Muronga, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Internationalisation.

“By reimagining the creative arts, we unlock new ways to understand ourselves and drive meaningful change in the world around us.”

The event also aims to deepen connections between the university and the broader Eastern Cape creative community, highlighting how art intersects with critical issues such as education, technology, activism, and entrepreneurship.

A space for collaboration and growth

The day will conclude with dedicated networking sessions, offering opportunities for collaboration between artists, students, academics, and entrepreneurs — all working at the intersection of creativity and innovation.

TEDxNelsonMandelaUniversity 2025 promises to be a celebration of imagination and cultural dynamism, positioning the creative arts not only as a reflection of society, but as a powerful force for its transformation.
