University Takes Action

Wits stated that the decision to suspend the individual was made after thorough internal consultations and engagement with the university’s Investigations Office and the Gender Equity Office.

The suspension follows a peaceful protest held by students on Monday night at the Braamfontein Campus, demonstrating against gender-based harm at the institution. Students voiced concerns over their safety on campus, though the situation was reported as calm the following morning.

Official Response and Call to Report

Wits University spokesperson Shirona Patel emphasized the institution’s commitment to addressing such serious matters.

“The University is looking into it. The Gender-Equity office is taking it very seriously. If a criminal needs to be opened, a criminal case will be opened. And we encourage people to come forward and report as soon as possible,” Patel said.

She acknowledged the difficulty victims face in coming forward, stating that Wits is striving to create a safe space for reporting. The university unequivocally condemned “any form of gender-based harm.”

Wits reiterated its encouragement for anyone affected by gender-based harm to report incidents immediately to the relevant authorities and the university offices.
