Following the sanctioned sale of promising 20-year-old defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi to MLS side Chicago Fire, Orlando Pirates are reportedly prioritizing two players as potential replacements in their squad.
The Buccaneers have identified a primary target and a strong backup option to bolster their defense.

Primary Target: Thabang Matuludi
The club’s top choice to replace the Bafana Bafana international is Thabang Matuludi, the versatile 26-year-old star from Polokwane City.
- Versatility: Matuludi is highly valued for his ability to cover both right-back and centre-back positions.
- Form: Having recovered from a recent spate of injuries, he is aiming to impress during the upcoming 2025 AFCON tournament.
- Interest: Pirates are keen to secure his services in the January transfer window, and despite high demand, the report suggests Pirates remain the player’s preferred destination if he leaves Polokwane.

Backup Option: Mfanafuthi Mkhize
Should the move for Matuludi fall through, Pirates have identified Durban City’s Mfanafuthi Mkhize as a strong alternative.
- Impact: The left-footed defender has been a consistent feature for the impressive PSL newcomers, appearing in all 15 of their league games so far this season.
Mabasa’s Uncertain Future
In separate transfer news, striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, who was the country’s leading goal-scorer in 2024, faces an uncertain future at the club. Despite his form, he currently sits low in the striking pecking order and may have no option but to leave.
Furthermore, there is speculation of ongoing differences between Mabasa and Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, which is cited as a reason for his continued exclusion from the national team setup.
