Stellenbosch University (SU) has kicked off 2026 with a major milestone, securing a coveted spot among the top 300 institutions in the inaugural TIME Magazine and Statista R “World’s Top Universities” ranking.
Released on January 28, the ranking evaluates over 32,000 higher education institutions worldwide, placing SU at number 275 globally. Within South Africa, Stellenbosch University ranks third, behind the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand.
Key Performance Pillars
The inaugural ranking methodology focuses on three core pillars to measure institutional excellence:
- Innovation and Economic Impact (Strongest Pillar): Highlighting contributions to scientific advancement, knowledge diffusion, and graduate employability.
- Academic Capacity and Performance: Measuring resources devoted to teaching and research, as well as scholarly output.
- Global Engagement: Assessing international staff and student attraction.
The Path to the Top 100
This achievement follows SU’s strong performance in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject. Commenting on the milestone, Prof Sibusiso Moyo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Internationalisation, noted that this ranking aligns with SU’s strategic plan to become Africa’s leading research-intensive university.
“Making it to the 275th position shows that we are well on our way to pivot to the Top 100 global universities,” Prof Moyo said. “Of course, this will require a huge investment in terms of research and development and grantsmanship.”
