As the 2026 academic year gains momentum, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting academically talented students. Following a massive R2.3 billion investment in financial aid and scholarships that benefited nearly 30,000 students in 2025, the University has introduced several key concessions to ensure that financial hurdles do not stand in the way of education.

As of February 20, 2026, Wits has successfully registered 40,356 students, reaching approximately 98% of its capacity.

1. Key Registration Concessions for 2026

Wits has implemented several debt-related thresholds to ease the registration process:

  • Debt Threshold of R10,000: Students owing R10,000 or less are permitted to register immediately.
  • The “Missing Middle” Support: Students with a household income under R600,000 can apply to the Wits Registration Assistance Fund (WRAF). The fund covers 50% of outstanding debt (capped at R50,000). R20 million has been allocated to this fund for 2026.
  • Historical Debt up to R120,000: Academically deserving undergraduates with debt under R120,000 can register by signing an Acknowledgement of Debt (AOD), provided they meet specific academic codes (PCD/RET).
  • Sponsorship & NSFAS: Students with secured 2026 funding or those awaiting unpaid NSFAS disbursements from previous years can register by signing specialized AODs.
  • Postgraduate Support: Local students with Postgraduate Merit Awards can register if debt is under R10,000, or by paying 50% of higher debt amounts and arranging an AOD.

2. Additional Funding & Digital Portals

Beyond institutional funds, Wits leverages collaborative fundraising and technology:

  • SRC Access Fund: Wits has matched the SRC’s fundraising efforts “rand for rand,” resulting in a R6 million disbursement to help students register.
  • Discretionary Funding Portal: A digital matchmaking system that connects high-performing students with external bursaries and donations as they become available.

3. Affordable Accommodation & International Support

The University continues to push for residential affordability:

  • Fee Caps: Wits limited the 2026 residence fee increase to 4.2%, notably lower than the ministerial recommendation of 6.2%.
  • Deposit Postponements: Students may apply to postpone residence deposits via the self-service portal.
  • International Students: Returning international students with no debt can register by paying 50% of the current year’s fees upfront.

4. Support for Graduates

Wits ensures that debt does not entirely block a student’s future career prospects:

  • Graduation: Students owing less than R15,000 can graduate upon signing an AOD.
  • Employment Assistance: Those owing more than R15,000 still receive access to their transcripts and “propensity letters” from Faculty offices to help them secure jobs or third-party funding.
