The University of South Africa (Unisa) officially set the stage for a successful 2026 academic year by hosting its comprehensive Orientation Week from 23 to 27 February. Spanning across various regional campuses, the program provided both freshers and returning students with the digital and academic blueprints needed to master the world of Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL).
Mastering the Digital Campus: myUnisa and Beyond
Because Unisa operates on a high-tech distance model, a primary focus of the week was ensuring no student is left behind in the digital divide. Practical, hands-on workshops guided attendees through:
- myUnisa & myLife: Navigating the essential portals for communication and administration.
- Study Material Access: Streamlining the process of downloading guides and resources.
- Assignment Submission: Step-by-step tutorials on participating in online activities and meeting deadlines.

The Gold Standard: Academic Integrity in the Age of AI
During a standout session, Acting Gauteng Regional Director Dr. Erin Naudé delivered a vital charge to the student body. While welcoming the new cohort, she placed heavy emphasis on academic honesty.
Dr. Naudé specifically cautioned against plagiarism and urged students to maintain a “responsible and ethical” relationship with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in their coursework—a timely reminder as tech continues to reshape the higher education landscape.
Faculty-Specific Deep Dives
Beyond general orientation, students branched off into specialized sessions to meet the unique demands of their chosen career paths:
- College of Law: Future legal minds gathered in dedicated venues for guidance on professional ethics and program-specific navigation.
- College of Education: Aspiring teachers were introduced to specialized teaching resources and the specific expectations of the South African schooling environment.
A Supportive Community for Distance Learners
Orientation Week wasn’t just about technicalities; it was about connection. The week fostered a rare face-to-face (or screen-to-screen) environment where students could engage directly with staff and peers. This sense of community is a cornerstone of Unisa’s commitment to ensuring every student feels informed, prepared, and supported from Day One.
