This isn't just about clearing an infection; it’s about restoring a healthy ecosystem to reduce HIV risk and improve pregnancy outcomes.

A landmark international study, led by the University of Cape Town (UCT) in collaboration with US-based researchers, is changing the landscape of reproductive health. Published in Cell Host & Microbe, the VIBRANT study successfully tested a new “live biotherapeutic” treatment designed to restore the vaginal microbiome rather than just clearing infection.

The Problem: The Antibiotic Revolving Door

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) affects one in three women globally. While antibiotics can clear the initial infection, they often fail to restore the “protective shield” of healthy bacteria. This leads to:

  • High recurrence rates.
  • Increased inflammation, which raises the risk of HIV and other STIs.
  • Adverse pregnancy outcomes.

The Solution: A Probiotic “Powerhouse”

Instead of just eliminating harmful microbes, researchers isolated over 20 strains of Lactobacillus crispatus—the “good” bacteria—from women in South Africa and the USA. These strains were used to create a multi-strain therapeutic product.

Key Findings from the Trial:

  • Safety First: The live bacterial products were safe and well-tolerated.
  • Successful Colonization: The beneficial bacteria successfully “moved in” and stayed detectable for several months in many participants.
  • Global Diversity: By using strains from both African and American populations, the treatment is designed to work for a diverse global demographic.

“Microbiome-based therapies aim to restore the natural microbial balance… rather than simply eliminating bacteria.” — Professor Jo-Ann Passmore, UCT.
