The South African rugby fraternity has united in grief following the untimely passing of Christopher ‘Chippie’ Solomon. Leading the national tributes, SA Rugby President Mark Alexander expressed the profound sense of loss felt across the country for a man who was far more than a manager—he was a pillar of the sport.

Solomon, who served as the DHL Stormers team manager for an incredible 21 seasons, passed away on Saturday morning, leaving behind a legacy of dedication that spanned over two decades and more than 350 matches.

A Quiet Giant of the Game

Mark Alexander described the news as a heavy blow to the rugby community, highlighting the humility and steadfastness that defined Solomon’s tenure since he first joined the Stormers in 2004.

“Since 2004, Chippie served with unwavering dedication,” Alexander noted. “He guided and supported players and colleagues with a level of commitment and humility that defined his distinguished career.”

From the Classroom to the Touchline

Born in Newlands and raised in Bonteheuwel, Solomon’s path to professional rugby was rooted in service. Before his 20-year stint with the Stormers, he was a respected educator and headmaster, qualities that naturally transitioned into his role as a mentor. To the players he looked after, he wasn’t just staff—he was ‘Uncle Chippie’, a constant and comforting presence on the touchline and in the locker room.

A Lasting Impact

The SA Rugby President extended deepest condolences to Solomon’s wife, Pearl, and his children, Nina and Chad. He emphasized that while the man has passed, his influence on South African rugby remains permanent.

  • Dedication: Over 350 matches managed with the same passion as his first.
  • Mentorship: Acted as a father figure to generations of Springboks and Stormers stars.
  • Community: Represented the Western Cape with professionalism and pride on the global stage.

“His legacy of service and devotion to rugby will never be forgotten,” Alexander concluded. “May his family find comfort in knowing his impact lives on in all of us.”
