Quewin Nortje returns to the Blitzboks squad for the Hong Kong Sevens.

The Springbok Sevens have touched down in the Far East with a major weapon back in their arsenal. Quewin Nortje, the 23-year-old flyer, is set to make his 2026 season debut at the iconic Kai Tak Sports Park, declaring himself “battle-ready” after a grueling recovery journey.

Despite a string of persistent injuries that sidelined him during the regular series, Nortje arrives in Hong Kong with no signs of rust, thanks to the high-intensity “Stellenbosch furnace” where the squad prepares.

The Stellenbosch Standard

For Nortje, the transition from rehab to the world stage has been seamless due to the competitive culture fostered at home. He emphasizes that the training sessions in South Africa often mirror the brutality of a cup final.

  • Iron Sharpens Iron: With a 20-man squad fighting for limited travel spots, the internal competition ensures every player is match-fit.
  • Collective Mindset: “A win for the guys on tour is a win for the guys at home,” Nortje noted, highlighting the selfless culture that has already secured four tournament wins for the Blitzboks this season.

Chasing the Hong Kong Crown

This marks Nortje’s third visit to Hong Kong, a tournament that remains a “bucket list” item for the squad. Having missed out on gold in his previous appearances, the speedster is determined to help South Africa claim one of the most prestigious titles in the sport.

The Road to Glory (Pool A):

  • Uruguay
  • Spain
  • Argentina

Defensive Fortress

The Blitzboks head into the World Championship phase as a defensive powerhouse. Even in the absence of key players like Shilton van Wyk in previous rounds, the team’s depth has shone through:

  • Ryan Oosthuizen: Led the charge with 16 tackles in New York.
  • Sebastiaan Jobb & Selvyn Davids: Combined for 26 crucial stops.
  • Impi Visser: The captain continues to lead from the front with clinical defensive work.

As the series champions, South Africa enters this three-event World Championship stretch (Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux) with zero relegation pressure and maximum confidence.
