South African acting heavy-hitter S’dumo Mtshali is riding a massive wave of global success, even if his latest role has turned him into public enemy number one on streaming feeds.
Mtshali recently sat down with CNN Afrika alongside co-star Gugu Gumede to discuss the viral impact of Netflix’s smash-hit South African series, The Polygamist. Mtshali plays the divisive Jonasi Gomora opposite Gumede’s Joyce Gomora, delivering a performance that has ignited heated debate across social media.

When asked about the intense online reaction to his morally complex character, Mtshali laughed off the backlash and warmly accepted his new status as streaming’s ultimate antagonist.
“We’re stretching what we can do as storytellers—proving we can tackle different work and reach the entire world,” Mtshali shared during the interview. “I will happily own the title [of Netflix’s most hated man] for now!”
His comments come on the heels of major international milestones for The Polygamist. The 22-episode supernovela racked up an astonishing 24 million views in just five weeks between June and July 2026.
The show’s stellar run even caught the attention of Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who specifically highlighted The Polygamist during Netflix’s Q2 2026 earnings call on 16 July. Sarandos praised the show as a breakout local hit that successfully crossed borders to dominate regional and international top 10 charts.
