Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly closing in on another important addition, with former Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC defender Deano van Rooyen said to have completed his move to the reigning African champions.
According to reports from SoccerBeat, the transfer is now a done deal, with Sundowns expected to make an official announcement soon.
The move comes at an important time for Miguel Cardoso’s side, who have been forced to deal with injuries in the right-back position.
With Khuliso Mudau and Zuko Mdunyelwa unavailable, Sundowns have been left short of experienced options in the position, with Thapelo Morena among the senior players available to fill the role.
Van Rooyen’s arrival would therefore provide timely reinforcement for the Brazilians as they navigate a congested domestic and continental schedule.
Van Rooyen makes quick return to the PSL
The reported move comes shortly after Van Rooyen parted ways with Orlando Pirates by mutual agreement.
The defender joined the Buccaneers after establishing himself as one of Stellenbosch FC’s most dependable players. His departure from Pirates has now opened the door for a return to the PSL champions’ ranks.
Known as “Die Hond” because of his tireless work rate and never-say-die approach, Van Rooyen offers experience, defensive discipline and the ability to operate effectively at full-back.
He is expected to link up with his new teammates immediately if the transfer is formally confirmed.
Sundowns add another piece to their squad
Van Rooyen would become Sundowns’ fifth signing of the current transfer window, following the arrivals of Antonio Van Wyk, Cassius Mailula, Siyanda Ndlovu and Katlego Ntsabaleng.
His signing would also underline Sundowns’ determination to maintain squad depth while competing across multiple fronts.
The Brazilians are balancing their domestic commitments with CAF Champions League football and other major continental and global assignments. Having another experienced full-back available could prove particularly valuable during a demanding period of the campaign.
From Stellenbosch standout to Sundowns
Van Rooyen’s career began in Stellenbosch, where he developed alongside his cousin and fellow professional footballer Ashley Du Preez.
He joined Stellenbosch FC as a teenager and made his senior debut in 2016 at the age of 19 against Mthatha Bucks in the National First Division.
He played a significant role as Stellenbosch secured promotion to the Premiership in 2019 and went on to become the club’s all-time appearance leader, making more than 160 appearances.
His time in the Cape Winelands also ended with silverware. Van Rooyen co-captained Stellenbosch to victory in the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup, adding a major trophy to his impressive spell with the club.
Now, if the reported transfer is officially confirmed, Van Rooyen will begin the next chapter of his career at Chloorkop — and Sundowns will hope his experience can help solve a pressing problem at right-back.
