Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has shed light on his strategic squad management after five capped Springboks—including No 8 Evan Roos and scrumhalf Embrose Papier—were released back to their local franchises ahead of South Africa’s upcoming Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires.
Alongside Roos and Papier, hooker André-Hugo Venter, prop Ntuthuko Mchunu, and winger Jaco Williams have been made available for their respective franchise midweek clashes against the touring All Blacks during the inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry (RGR) series.
Meanwhile, lock Ruben van Heerden—who recently made his Test debut against Wales—is the sole player omitted from the main group as he settles into his new club, Montpellier, in France. Van Heerden remains on standby for the national side.

Rather than viewing these releases as outright omissions, Erasmus outlined a calculated masterplan designed to balance player recovery, match fitness, and squad evaluation:
“We put a lot of thought into how we manage this entire group. Splitting the squad into two groups allows players to stake a claim for places in the RGR series,” Erasmus explained.
“Some players are returning from injury and need valuable game time, while the players released to their franchises will have an opportunity to face the All Blacks in midweek fixtures. This will be invaluable experience once we finalize the squad for the New Zealand Tests. It’s a win-win situation.”
Managing the Load: Argentina Tour & Johannesburg Camp
Due to travel roster limitations for the 8 August Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires, the Boks will split their operational focus:
- Argentina Touring Group: A streamlined squad selected for the single Test in South America.
- Johannesburg Rehabilitation & Prep Group: Returning stars and heavily used Nations Championship players remaining in Gauteng under Springbok medical and coaching supervision to prepare directly for the All Blacks.
“There are players who have played a lot of rugby this year during the Nations Championship and need a match off to allow their bodies to recover,” Erasmus added.
