Orlando Pirates face La Cure Sylvester in Mauritius, where most players reportedly earn around R5,000 a month. Here’s what awaits the Buccaneers.

Orlando Pirates return to the CAF Champions League this weekend, but their opening assignment in Mauritius comes with a striking financial contrast between the Buccaneers and their opponents, La Cure Sylvester SC.

The South African giants travel to the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex on Sunday, 6 September, for a 13:30 kick-off, knowing that the challenge will extend beyond what happens on the pitch.

While Pirates operate in one of Africa’s more financially powerful domestic football environments, their Mauritian opponents work with significantly smaller resources.

Most Mauritian Players Earn Around R5,000

Former Mauritius international Patrice D’Avrincourt has provided an insight into the financial realities facing footballers in the island nation.

According to D’Avrincourt, only a handful of Mauritius-based players are among the highest earners, with three or four reportedly making around 50,000 Mauritian rupees per month — approximately R17,000.

For the majority, however, monthly earnings are reportedly closer to 15,000 Mauritian rupees, equivalent to about R5,000.

“Talking of money, the best-paid players here get 50,000 Mauritian rupees [R17,000], and that is maybe three or four players,” D’Avrincourt told Goal.

“Most of the players here earn 15,000 Mauritian rupees [R5,000], so I hope you understand what I mean when I say the levels are not the same.”

The figures underline the enormous financial difference between the two football environments.

Pirates compete in the Betway Premiership and have considerably greater commercial, sporting and financial resources at their disposal, while La Cure Sylvester operate within a much smaller football economy.

Pirates Must Adapt to Unfamiliar Conditions

Despite the financial advantage, Pirates cannot afford to treat the fixture as a foregone conclusion.

D’Avrincourt says the Buccaneers will also have to adjust to conditions that differ significantly from what they regularly experience in South Africa.

The match is scheduled to take place on an artificial pitch at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex, a venue with a reported capacity of approximately 4,500 spectators.

“Pirates will come here and play on an artificial pitch at a stadium with only 4,500 seats,” D’Avrincourt said.

The playing surface, venue atmosphere and unfamiliar surroundings could all test Pirates’ ability to adapt quickly.

Financial Favourites Still Have a Job to Do

On paper, the Buccaneers enter the contest with clear advantages in squad depth, experience and financial resources.

But continental football has repeatedly demonstrated that disparities on paper do not automatically guarantee comfortable victories.

For La Cure Sylvester, the occasion represents an opportunity to challenge a much bigger opponent on home soil. The Mauritian side can approach the match without the same level of pressure, while Pirates will be expected to take control and return to South Africa with a positive result.

The financial gap may be staggering, but Pirates still have to prove their superiority over 90 minutes.

The CAF Champions League encounter kicks off at 13:30 on Sunday, 6 September, at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex in Mauritius.

For the Buccaneers, the mission is simple: overcome the unfamiliar conditions, respect the opposition and make their greater resources count.
