Orlando Pirates are back to focusing on their domestic campaign after making a winning return to Betway Premiership action.
The defending champions recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory over Durban City on Thursday, keeping themselves firmly in the early title race.
Pirates Close The Gap On Sundowns
Goals from Lebone Seema and returning forward Tshepang Moremi secured the points for Pirates, with Kabelo Kgositsile and Simphiwe Masilela providing the assists.
The result leaves Pirates four points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. However, the Buccaneers have two matches in hand and remain unbeaten after six league outings.
That combination gives Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side plenty of reason to remain confident as the domestic campaign gathers momentum.
Marumo Gallants Next For The Buccaneers
Pirates will not have long to celebrate their latest victory, with another league fixture already on the horizon.
The champions travel to face bottom-placed Marumo Gallants on Sunday, 20 September, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.
Another victory would keep the pressure on the teams above them and allow Pirates to make further progress in their pursuit of another league title.
Mofokeng Making His Mark In Belgium
Away from the domestic campaign, former Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng continues to attract attention in Belgium following his move to Union Saint-Gilloise.
Mofokeng enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 season, scoring 10 goals and providing eight assists in 27 league appearances for Pirates.
The attacker has made an encouraging start to life in Europe. He converted the decisive penalty during Union SG’s shootout victory over Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup final before scoring his first Europa League goal in a 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen.
Mofokeng has also scored three times in five league appearances, while Union SG have won their last five matches across all competitions.
Can Pirates Challenge On All Fronts?
With their unbeaten league start intact and games in hand over Sundowns, Pirates remain firmly involved in the domestic title picture.
The Buccaneers will also have their sights set on competing across multiple competitions, raising the possibility of another memorable campaign for the reigning champions.
The next test against Marumo Gallants could provide another opportunity for Pirates to strengthen their position near the top of the table.
