The Lions have confirmed the death of Hyron Andrews, the former Sharks and Sale Sharks lock, as the rugby community pays tribute to the 31-year-old.

The Lions have confirmed the death of Hyron Andrews, the experienced lock who passed away while on tour in France ahead of the team’s opening Investec Champions Cup fixture. His passing has left teammates, coaches, supporters and the wider rugby community in mourning.

The 31-year-old was part of the Lions squad preparing for their European campaign and United Rugby Championship commitments when the devastating news emerged on Friday, 16 October 2026.

In an official statement, the Lions paid tribute to Andrews, describing him as a valued member of the team whose loss would be deeply felt by everyone who knew him.

“The former Sharks and Sale Sharks lock forward was a valued member of the Lions family, and his loss will be felt profoundly by his teammates, coaches, supporters and all who had the privilege of knowing him,” the club said.

The Lions also extended their condolences to Andrews’ wife, Maiglin, their young sons and the wider Andrews family, asking that their privacy be respected as they grieve.

Lions CEO Pays Tribute to Hyron Andrews

Lions Rugby Company chief executive Rudolf Straeuli expressed his heartbreak over the loss, remembering Andrews as both a talented rugby player and a cherished member of the squad.

Straeuli said Andrews had joined the Lions during the current season and had quickly become part of the club’s rugby family.

On behalf of the club’s chairman, Altmann Allers, the board and the wider Lions organisation, Straeuli offered his deepest sympathies to Maiglin, their sons Hendrix and Emerson, and the entire family.

The Lions confirmed that further information about an appropriate tribute to Andrews would be communicated in due course.

Lions Set to Honour Andrews Against La Rochelle

Despite the tragic circumstances, the Lions are scheduled to play their Champions Cup opener against French club La Rochelle on Saturday, 17 October, with kick-off listed for 18:30 South African time.

The fixture takes place as the team and its supporters come to terms with the loss of a teammate whose passing has overshadowed the start of their European campaign.

The club has indicated that more details about commemorating Andrews will follow.

Reports Emerge About Circumstances Surrounding His Death

Reports indicated that Andrews was found unresponsive in a shower area at the team hotel in France. Emergency services were reportedly called shortly after 10:00 on Friday, but he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The precise circumstances and medical cause of his death had not been publicly confirmed in the information available at the time of the report. SA Rugby reportedly described the incident as an “accident,” although further official clarification would be needed to establish exactly what occurred.

A psychological support unit was reportedly made available to Lions players and staff, as well as hotel employees, following the incident.

Remembering Andrews’ Rugby Career

Born in Pretoria, Andrews built a substantial professional rugby career through spells with the Sharks, Sale Sharks and the Lions.

He made more than 100 appearances across competitions for the Sharks before moving to England in 2024 to join Sale Sharks, where he reportedly accumulated close to 50 appearances.

Andrews also represented the Junior Springboks on two occasions, adding international age-grade experience to his club career.

His journey through South African and English rugby earned him a place in the professional game, and his death has prompted an outpouring of sadness across the rugby community.

As the Lions prepare to take the field in France, the focus remains on Andrews’ family, friends and teammates as they navigate an immense loss.

Hyron Andrews will be remembered by the Lions and the wider rugby community for his contribution to the game. May he rest in peace.
