Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has opened up about his strong connection with Amakhosi and South African supporters after scoring on one of European football’s biggest stages.
The 22-year-old defender found the net for Sabah FK in their 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund, adding another standout moment to his impressive European campaign.
Despite playing thousands of kilometres away from home, McCarthy has continued to receive strong support from South African football fans — something the young defender clearly appreciates.
McCarthy: Chiefs Are a Massive Club
Speaking after the Dortmund match, McCarthy was asked about the support he has received from South Africa.
The former Chiefs player described his country as “the best country in the world” and highlighted the importance of growing up at a club with such a passionate fanbase.
McCarthy also expressed his appreciation for supporters who continue to follow his progress abroad.
For the defender, the connection with home remains strong even as he builds his career in European football.
From Naturena to the Champions League
McCarthy’s rise has been particularly impressive since leaving Kaizer Chiefs in June.
After making the move to Sabah FK, the defender played an important role as the Azerbaijani club progressed through the Champions League qualifying rounds and eventually reached the competition’s main phase.
He has since faced some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund.
His latest performance against Dortmund added another significant chapter to his developing career, with his goal showing the attacking threat he can provide from defence.
Chiefs Fans Will Be Watching Closely
McCarthy spent two seasons with Kaizer Chiefs, making 24 appearances and scoring once before moving abroad.
He has also represented Bafana Bafana, earning his first senior international cap in 2025.
At just 22, the defender now finds himself gaining valuable experience against elite European opposition while continuing to attract attention from football supporters back home.
His progress will undoubtedly be followed closely by Chiefs fans, particularly given his previous connection with the Soweto giants.
Could McCarthy Be Heading for an Even Bigger European Move?
With his Champions League performances continuing to attract attention, the next question is how far McCarthy can take his career.
Regularly competing against top European opposition could provide the platform for another major move — potentially to a bigger club or one of Europe’s more established leagues.
For now, the former Amakhosi defender is focused on making his mark in Europe, while remaining proud of the club and country that helped shape his journey.
