Football legend Thierry Henry is set to add international star power to this weekend’s Soweto Derby after Betway confirmed that the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward will attend the highly anticipated clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

The announcement, made on Thursday, has added another major attraction to one of South Africa’s biggest sporting occasions, with thousands of supporters expected to turn out for the latest chapter in the fierce rivalry between the two Soweto giants.

Henry’s visit comes during the Premier Soccer League’s 30th-anniversary celebrations, which mark three decades of professional football under the league’s current era from 1996 to 2026.

Thierry Henry to Experience the Passion of the Soweto Derby

Through its sponsorship initiative, Betway announced that Henry would join supporters at FNB Stadium as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs battle for bragging rights.

The French football icon will also meet the winner of Betway’s S’bonise & Win campaign and present the prize to the successful supporter. The promotion celebrates fans who display their loyalty through their club colours and football regalia, with eligible Betway account holders having the opportunity to win up to R30,000 in cash.

Henry’s presence is expected to add an international dimension to the occasion, which is renowned for its passionate supporters, vibrant atmosphere and intense competition on the pitch.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Henry expressed his excitement about experiencing the famous rivalry in person.

“I’ve experienced some incredible football rivalries around the world, and I know how much the Soweto Derby means to supporters in South Africa,” Henry said.

He added that he was looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at FNB Stadium and meeting the fans who make the occasion so special.

Thierry Henry’s Legendary Football Career

Henry is widely regarded as one of the finest forwards of his generation, having enjoyed an outstanding career at club and international level.

The former France international became an Arsenal legend, scoring 228 goals to establish himself as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. He was instrumental in the Gunners’ unforgettable 2003/04 Premier League campaign, when they completed the season unbeaten to earn the famous “Invincibles” tag.

During his time in England, Henry also won four Premier League Golden Boot awards, underlining his remarkable consistency in front of goal.

He later joined Barcelona, where he was part of the team that won the historic treble in the 2008/09 season, including the UEFA Champions League title.

On the international stage, Henry enjoyed further success with France, helping his country win the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil and the UEFA Euro 2000 championship.

His visit to South Africa therefore offers local supporters an opportunity to see one of football’s most recognisable figures experience the atmosphere surrounding the country’s biggest domestic rivalry.

Betway Highlights the Importance of Supporters

Jason Shield, Betway Africa’s Head of Sponsorship, said the Soweto Derby represents the passion, rivalry and supporter culture that make South African football unique.

He explained that Henry’s appearance would make the occasion even more memorable as the PSL celebrates its 30-year milestone.

Shield also highlighted the S’bonise & Win campaign as a way of placing supporters at the centre of the experience and recognising the colour, energy and pride they bring to matchdays.

The initiative forms part of the broader celebrations surrounding the derby, where the spectacle extends beyond the 90 minutes of football.

A Special Occasion for South African Football

The meeting between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is already one of the most anticipated fixtures on the South African football calendar. Henry’s planned attendance adds further international attention to the contest.

For supporters, the occasion combines a historic domestic rivalry with the opportunity to celebrate the legacy of a global football icon.

As the PSL marks three decades of professional football, this weekend’s Soweto Derby promises to be about more than the result alone. The passion in the stands, the history between the clubs and the presence of Henry will all contribute to the spectacle at FNB Stadium.
