In a significant move to bolster South Africa’s technological sovereignty, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) recently hosted a high-level delegation from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI). The visit, led by Director-General Dr. Mlungisi Cele, focused on deepening the existing collaborative research ties between the university and the state.

A Shared Vision for National Progress

UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, welcomed the delegation, highlighting the university’s long-standing relationship with the department. “We are looking at our existing collaborative projects and exploring ways and means through which we could collaborate more,” Prof. Mpedi stated.

For the DSTI, these partnerships are vital. Dr. Cele emphasized that in today’s volatile geopolitical climate, building domestic technological capabilities is no longer optional—it is a necessity for national success. “Countries that do not have technological sovereignty… are doomed to fail,” Dr. Cele remarked, urging the university to continue its path as a premier research hub.

Pioneering Innovations on Display

The delegation toured several cutting-edge facilities, witnessing firsthand how UJ is applying science to solve real-world problems. Key stops included the university’s specialized health clinics, the Rescue Simulation Centre, and the Centre for Ecological Intelligence.

Two projects, in particular, showcased the transformative potential of the UJ-DSTI partnership:

  • Revolutionizing Housing: The Department of Civil Engineering Technology demonstrated state-of-the-art 3D printing machinery. In a groundbreaking pilot project with the Department of Human Settlements, the team successfully constructed an RDP-sized house in just eight hours, offering a glimpse into a faster, more efficient future for housing development.
  • Emergency Preparedness: The delegation visited the Rescue Simulation Centre—the first of its kind on the African continent—which provides students with immersive, hands-on training for high-stakes emergency environments.

Promoting Collaboration Over Competition

Dr. Cele’s visit underscored a shift in the national research landscape, prioritizing synergy between institutions. The DSTI’s goal is to foster a cohesive science and research ecosystem where universities act as central pillars of innovation rather than isolated competitors.

As UJ continues to solidify its reputation as a top-performing research institution in Africa, the message from the DSTI is clear: the university must continue to push boundaries. By integrating academic research with practical, life-changing technology, UJ is positioned to remain at the forefront of South Africa’s push for self-reliance and global competitiveness.
