This week, 13 Vice-Chancellors from across Africa visited @UniversityofJohannesburg to find out.

On 18 March 2026, a high-level delegation of 13 vice-chancellors from across the continent arrived at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Their mission: to study how UJ has successfully pivoted from a traditional teaching institution into a high-impact engine for entrepreneurship and economic growth.

Building Entrepreneurial Hubs

Led by the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) in partnership with the British Council and the UK FCDO, the visit highlights UJ’s reputation as the gold standard for research commercialization and technology transfer in Africa.

“Innovation doesn’t begin with hardware. It begins with hope, access and the right environment to dream boldly.” — Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, UJ Vice-Chancellor.

Key Stops on the “Innovation Map”

The delegation’s itinerary focused on the practical infrastructure required to turn a campus into a startup factory:

  • The UniPod Innovation Hub: Launched with the UNDP, this facility is a crown jewel in UJ’s ecosystem. It offers student entrepreneurs access to AI laboratories, prototyping equipment, and direct investor networks.
  • Technology Transfer Office (TTO): The delegation explored the “missing link” in many African universities—translating academic papers into market-ready intellectual property and startups.
  • Johannesburg Business School (JBS): Engaging with experts on the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) and sustainable development to understand the economic theory behind the transformation.

The “NEIL” Network and Continental Scaling

The visit was supported by the Network of Entrepreneurial Institutions Leaders (NEIL), a platform designed for university heads to co-design solutions for the continent’s unique challenges.

By connecting UJ’s UniPod to a network of over 25 hubs across Africa, the university is ensuring that local innovations—from AI-driven platforms to aquaculture solutions—have a clear pathway to scale across borders.

The Shift: From Graduates to Job Creators

With youth unemployment remaining a critical challenge across Africa, the consensus among the visiting leaders was clear: the university of the future cannot just grant degrees. As highlighted by Professor Erika Kraemer-Mbula, the goal is to create a single ecosystem where research, education, and infrastructure meet to move ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace.
