Quality Engineering Confirmed: TUT’s FEBE Secures Continued ECSA Accreditation

Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) achieves continued ECSA accreditation for three BEngTech degrees.

The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has reaffirmed its status as a premier provider of engineering education after receiving continued official accreditation from the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) for three of its undergraduate degree offerings.

The decision follows a rigorous two-day audit in June 2026, during which an ECSA panel of academic and industry specialists completed a comprehensive evaluation of FEBE’s Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEngTech) programmes in:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics Engineering

Rigorous Standards and Global Recognition

The assessment included in-depth reviews of course curricula, assessment protocols, and quality assurance frameworks, alongside facility tours and direct interviews with academic staff and students. The panel confirmed full continued accreditation across all three programmes through to the next regular review cycle.

Because ECSA is a signatory to the Sydney Accord under the International Engineering Alliance (IEA), TUT’s accredited BEngTech degrees carry international benchmark recognition, opening doors for graduates globally.

Faculty and Department Leadership Reacts

Prof Mxolisi Shongwe, Executive Dean of FEBE, highlighted the collective dedication required to maintain these national standards:

“This achievement reflects the collective commitment of our academic and support staff to maintaining high standards in teaching, learning and programme quality. Continued accreditation gives our students confidence that they are receiving an education that the engineering profession recognises and aligned with industry expectations.”

Echoing the sentiment, Dr. Louis Beneke, Head of Department for Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, noted:

“This accreditation assures industry that TUT graduates are well-qualified, competent and equipped with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in the engineering profession.”

Acting Faculty Quality Officer Jones Moloisane emphasized that the successful audit reinforces TUT’s reputation for turning out workplace-ready technical talent, while supporting candidate and professional registration pathways for graduates both locally and abroad.
