The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is hosting a transformative three-year international partnership aimed at elevating South Africa’s engineering sector through jointly accredited graduate programmes, cross-border research, and professional qualification pathways.
The South African-German Graduate School (SAGGS) is a capacity-building initiative led by the Technological Higher Education Network South Africa (THENSA)—of which TUT is a core member—and the German University Consortium for International Cooperation (DHIK). The programme is supported by funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Dual-Accredited Qualifications and Global Mobility
The SAGGS initiative focuses on designing and delivering practice-oriented qualifications at both the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and Master of Engineering (Professional) levels across South African universities of technology.
Graduates of the programme will earn dual-recognition pathways, allowing them to register as professional engineers in both South Africa and Europe through accreditation from the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (EUR-ACE).
Key operational pillars of the three-year agreement include:
- Curriculum Alignment: Co-developing high-impact coursework aligned with global industrial standards.
- Academic & Student Mobility: Facilitating exchange opportunities, joint research, and teaching visits between South Africa and Germany.
- Scholarly Collaboration: Co-authoring joint journal publications and international conference contributions.
- Alumni Ecosystems: Building an active international network for students, researchers, and industrial partners.
Strengthening International Partnerships
In addition to building local technical capacity, SAGGS expands the global footprint of German universities across Africa, mirroring successful DHIK consortium models previously established in China, India, and Mexico.
Commenting on the initiative, Prof Barend van Wyk, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching, Learning, and Technology at TUT and South African Director for SAGGS, emphasized the long-term impact of the collaboration:
“The goal of the SAGGS is to deliver long-term value for students, universities, and industry, and to create a shared talent pool with dual recognition in both South Africa and internationally.”
By pairing South Africa’s technical university infrastructure with German engineering frameworks, the SAGGS initiative marks a milestone in international scientific and industrial cooperation.
