CAPE TOWN — In a striking demonstration of world-class academic leadership and elite athletic performance, Dr Zamambo Mkhize—a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) African Gender Institute—has earned selection to represent South Africa at the upcoming World Tennis Masters Tour World Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, this August 2026.
Dr Mkhize will feature in both the team events (2–8 August) and individual championships (10–15 August). Her international call-up comes after a dominant run on the national circuit, culminating in her taking the Number 1 ranking in South Africa for the women’s 40-and-over category in November 2025.
A Full-Circle National Call-Up
For Dr Mkhize, heading to Lisbon marks a return to green-and-gold colors. She first represented South Africa as a 16-year-old junior star out of KwaZulu-Natal before securing a full tennis scholarship to the University of Florida.
She later earned a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to complete her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in gender studies research.
“Being selected to represent my country again as an adult is a full-circle life moment for me,” said Dr Mkhize. “It proves that the first time wasn’t a fluke, and it’s the culmination of hard work over the last two years. 2026 is particularly special: it marks 10 years since completing my PhD, 5 years since my first book was published, and now this honour. Being the only African woman selected while serving at UCT’s African Gender Institute is a privilege.”

Following the World Championships, Dr Mkhize will shift her focus back home to represent Western Cape Province at the Masters Inter-provincial in Gauteng from 9 to 13 September 2026.
