The University of Cape Town (UCT) has once again solidified its reputation as the undisputed powerhouse of higher education on the African continent. In the newly unveiled 2026–2027 US News Best Global Universities Rankings, UCT successfully retained its position as the number one ranked university in South Africa and Africa.
Climbing the ladder of academic excellence, UCT moved up to 122nd globally (tied with King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia), improving from its 124th-place finish in the previous cycle. With over 2,250 elite global institutions evaluated, the milestone comfortably cements UCT within the top 5% of universities worldwide.
Driving Global Knowledge: The Research Engine
Unlike conventional academic frameworks that balance teaching metrics or sustainability indices, the US News methodology focuses purely on raw research performance, bibliometric citations, global academic reputation, and international cross-border collaboration.
Reacting to the stellar performance, UCT Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalisation, Professor Thokozani Majozi, emphasized that the institution’s true value transcends leaderboard numbers:
“Our mission is to deliver outstanding teaching and learning, while advancing both curiosity-driven research and work that addresses the evolving challenges of our time. Together, these efforts contribute towards shaping a sustainable future and this result reflects the breadth of that impact.”
Global Giants: Infectious Diseases Leads UCT’s Elite Disciplines
UCT’s deepest global footprint remains within the health and environmental sciences. Most notably, the university ranked an astonishing 14th in the world for Infectious Diseases.
Professor Digby Warner, director of UCT’s Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM), noted that this global recognition is incredibly profound given the widening funding gaps impacting local clinical research. Rather than breeding complacency, Warner stated the results must strengthen collective resolve to preserve continental scientific expertise where it matters most.
