After more than two years of quiet development and “some change,” the “Mayo” hitmaker and South African hip-hop titan DJ Speedsta has officially unveiled his new digital platform: Up To Speed.
Moving beyond the time constraints of traditional FM radio, Speedsta is creating a dedicated space for the “unfiltered” hip-hop dialogue that Mzansi has been craving.
A Two-Part Cultural Experience
Speedsta isn’t just launching a show; he’s building an ecosystem. The new format is designed to dominate the weekly news cycle:
- The Sunday Kickoff: It begins with his weekly show on 5FM, which serves as the “appetizer” to set the week’s tone.
- The YouTube Deep Dive: The “Main Course” happens on his DJ Speedsta YouTube channel, where extended conversations allow topics—from artist beefs to industry politics—to breathe and be properly dissected.
- Fan Integration: In a move to democratize the culture, Speedsta has introduced a WhatsApp call line, allowing fans to send in their voice notes and opinions, making the audience a “fourth host” of the show.

The Powerhouse Team Behind the Scenes
The Up To Speed vision is a collaborative effort involving some of the sharpest minds in the game:
- Co-Hosts: Speedsta is flanked by DJ Fif Laaa and Okay Swisher, ensuring a balance of veteran wisdom and “New Wave” energy.
- Production Excellence: Technical execution is handled by Ayaprow_biggfun and BiggFun Media, with the series filmed at the state-of-the-art Loki’s Lekker studio facilities.
This Matters for SA Hip-Hop
Speedsta has spent a decade shaping the industry through gold-certified hits like “Special Somebody” and his landmark album BottlebrushStr. By launching Up To Speed, he is reclaiming his role as a tastemaker, ensuring that the stories behind the songs are told with authenticity and a “culture-first” mindset.
