While he is known for his world-class beats, Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee is now focusing on a different kind of vision. Through his namesake foundation, he is launching a nationwide initiative to ensure that no child in South Africa is left behind due to poor eyesight.
The Mission: Breaking the Invisible Barrier
For many students, “learning difficulties” are actually undiagnosed vision problems. Without the ability to see the chalkboard clearly, children face a steep uphill battle in literacy, concentration, and self-esteem. The Gift of Sight programme aims to bridge this gap by bringing clinical-grade eye care directly to the school gates.
The Roadmap: Starting in Soweto
The initiative kicks off on Monday, 09 February 2026, at Thabisang Primary School. The rollout is designed as a three-tier intervention:
- Step 1: Universal Screening Alongside a school uniform handover, over 700 learners will undergo professional vision screenings to identify immediate needs.
- Step 2: Prescription & Provision Students flagged during screening will receive comprehensive eye exams and be fitted with free prescription spectacles on-site or in follow-up visits.
- Step 3: Specialist Intervention For children with complex conditions, the foundation provides a pathway to advanced treatments and surgeries through its network of medical partners.
The Power of Partnership
Black Coffee’s vision is supported by a formidable alliance of medical professionals and corporate sponsors, ensuring the programme’s sustainability and nationwide reach:

A Message from Leadership
“Something as simple as a missed vision problem can make learning harder and limit a child’s potential. Through the Gift of Sight project, we want to ensure that eyesight is never a barrier to opportunity.” > — Lungie Maphumulo, CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation.
