Transitioning into distance learning can be a daunting leap, but for the first-year students at the University of South Africa (Unisa) Western Cape, the path is now officially clear. On Thursday, 26 February 2026, the region hosted its First-Year Student Orientation Day, a comprehensive five-hour deep dive into the university’s ecosystem.
Regional Director Motale Nkgoang set the tone for the day, challenging the freshers to move from passive spectators to active owners of their academic destinies.
The “Survival Kit”: Breaking Down Regional Support
The orientation moved beyond simple theory, offering a practical roadmap through the various units that make the Unisa experience seamless.
| Unit | Key Takeaway for Students |
| Academic Support | Jacques du Toit and Bronwyn Wright shared strategies for improved performance and success workshops. |
| Digital Tools | Thabo Dayeni demonstrated how to master Office 365 and navigate Unisa’s computer labs. |
| Counselling | Dr. Zamangwane Khanyile emphasized that mental health and emotional well-being are as vital as high grades. |
| Library & Research | Wilhelmina Zaal and Mduduzi Ncongwane unlocked the world of online databases and research tools. |
| Inclusivity (ARCSWiD) | Nwabisa Veli detailed the specific accommodations available for students living with disabilities. |

Legal Excellence and Peer Power
A standout moment of the day was the presentation by Nomonde Gxilishe, Principal Attorney of the Law Clinic. She urged aspiring legal practitioners to pay close attention to the clinic’s FOCI programmes—hands-on experiences that bridge the gap between textbooks and the courtroom.
The importance of “student-to-student” support was echoed by Lindie Marais and Nicola van der Watt, who highlighted the role of Student Quality Champions and mentors in helping peers navigate the Unisa maze.
Beyond the Books: Holistic Development
The RSRC, represented by Nomfundo Khumalo, reminded students that they have a voice in university governance, while Richard Wright encouraged participation in co-curricular activities to ensure students graduate as well-rounded citizens, not just degree-holders.
The day concluded with an interactive exhibition where students engaged with partners like Telkom, Zone Fitness, and Van Schaik, and received direct assistance with their myUnisa and myLife accounts in the computer labs.
