Stormers and Western Province legend Scarra Ntubeni announces his retirement after a 15-year career.

In an era of frequent transfers and international contracts, Scarra Ntubeni has achieved something truly rare in professional rugby: finishing a 15-year career as a dedicated “one-club man.” The veteran hooker has officially announced his retirement, concluding an illustrious journey with the Stormers and Western Province.

The 35-year-old, who became a symbol of loyalty and resilience at Naturena, will make his final appearance this Saturday against Connacht at the Cape Town Stadium.

A Career of Loyalty and Grit

Since making his debut, Ntubeni has amassed over 150 appearances for the Cape-based union. Despite facing significant injury setbacks that sidelined him for nearly two years at one point, his commitment to the blue and white stripes never wavered.

“I knew this day was going to come,” Ntubeni shared. “I am grateful for my time here at the Stormers, what this union has done for me and meant to me. It is time for me to ‘take a bow.’”

The Memorable Springbok Milestone

While Ntubeni only earned one Springbok cap, it is considered one of the most well-deserved honors in recent South African rugby history. After being a regular feature in Bok squads and touring parties since 2013 without seeing game time, he finally made his debut in 2019 against Argentina at Loftus Versfeld.

Many experts believe that without his history of untimely injuries and the incredible depth in the South African hooker department, Ntubeni would have easily added dozens more caps to his name.

Career Highlights

  • 2012 Currie Cup Glory: Played a pivotal role in Western Province’s historic win over the Sharks, ending an 11-year trophy drought against a front row featuring Beast Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis.
  • The 100-Cap Club: Joined the elite group of players to reach a century of matches for the Stormers, a milestone he celebrated at home in front of his family.
  • Resilience Personified: Overcoming multiple long-term injuries to remain a cornerstone of the Stormers’ locker room and a mentor to younger players.

The Cape Town Stadium is expected to give the “Voice of the People” a massive send-off this weekend as he hangs up his boots for the final time.
