South African rising star Olwethu Makhanya has reportedly been left “devastated” after MLS franchise Philadelphia Union rejected a massive €3.5 million (R65 million) offer from a top Belgian side.
The 22-year-old left-sided central defender is desperate to realize his dream of playing in Europe. However, the American club is holding out for a premium, blocking what would have been the biggest transfer fee of the former Stellenbosch FC player’s career.
A Promised Exit Denied
According to reports from iDiski Times journalist Lorenz Kohler, this is the fourth separate offer the Union have knocked back for the young defender.
Adding to Makhanya’s frustration is a reported gentleman’s agreement. The player’s camp claims Philadelphia Union had previously promised to facilitate a move to Europe over the past two transfer windows.
The player’s disappointment has grown further after seeing two of his former MLS teammates secure dream moves to Europe this year for transfer fees lower than the rejected R65 million Belgian bid.
Scottish Giants Rangers Wait in the Wings
Makhanya’s stellar rise has not gone unnoticed. Having won the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player award with Stellies before moving to the US, he has quickly racked up over 50 MLS appearances and earned a spot in Hugo Broos’ historic 2026 FIFA World Cup squad for South Africa.
Now, Scottish powerhouse Rangers FC are reportedly circling. Under Derek McInnes, the Glasgow-based club is searching for a quality left-sided center-back and is preparing a formal bid.
Whether Rangers can match the steep valuation set by Philadelphia—whose sporting department is under no pressure to sell with Makhanya contracted through 2027—remains the multi-million Rand question.
