"Since when does a big club celebrate a draw?" Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou slams Kaizer Chiefs for their defensive tactics and post-match celebrations.

The fallout from Sunday’s Soweto Derby has taken a sharp turn as Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou expressed his bewilderment at the post-match scenes. Despite Kaizer Chiefs surrendering an early lead to finish with a 1-1 draw, the Amakhosi camp was seen celebrating the result—a move Ouaddou suggests is beneath a club of their stature.

The draw ended a bruising streak of five consecutive league defeats for the Glamour Boys against their arch-rivals, but for the Buccaneers’ mentor, the tactics and the subsequent reaction told a story of “fear” rather than “ambition.”

Ouaddou: “The Draw Was a Fantastic Result for Them”

Speaking to the media after the clash, Ouaddou didn’t hold back on his assessment of Chiefs’ game management and their apparent satisfaction with a single point.

“I have seen a lot of players of Kaizer Chiefs going down. I cannot say that they were tired or just winning time because it seems like the draw was a fantastic result for them, for such a big club,” Ouaddou noted.

He emphasized that while Pirates felt they had dropped two points in their title chase, he expected a club like Chiefs to share that disappointment rather than celebrate a stalemate.

Tactical Stagnation: The “Fear” Factor

The criticism wasn’t limited to the opposition dugout. Former Kaizer Chiefs star Tsepo Masilela echoed Ouaddou’s sentiments, pointing out that Amakhosi’s defensive setup revealed a significant gap in quality between the two sides.

  • Midfield Overload: Masilela argued that Chiefs were so fearful of losing that they flooded the midfield specifically to disrupt Pirates’ rhythm, sacrificing their own offensive potential in the process.
  • Limited Ambition: While the tactic worked to secure a point, Masilela suggested it highlighted a lack of belief in their ability to outplay the Buccaneers.

The Silver Lining for Amakhosi

While the “park the bus” strategy drew criticism, the mathematical reality justifies the celebrations for the Chiefs faithful. The point gained has:

  • Secured a Safety Net: Chiefs now sit five points clear of fourth-placed AmaZulu.
  • CAF Ambitions: With only two wins needed from their remaining games, the club is on the verge of securing CAF Confederation Cup football for the 2027 season.
