Damian Willemse is fully embracing his multifaceted role as a utility back for the Springboks, emphasizing that his priority is simply performing well, regardless of the position he plays.
The 27-year-old has transformed since beginning his professional career as a teenage fly-half. He is now a key leader for both the Stormers and the national team, having successfully transitioned into a world-class player capable of covering fly-half (10), centre (12), and fullback (15).

Value of Versatility
Willemse’s ability to seamlessly shift between key backline positions makes his inclusion in the matchday 23 a near certainty. This versatility, reminiscent of retired Springbok great Frans Steyn, provides Coach Rassie Erasmus with critical assurance and the tactical flexibility needed to implement strategic moves, such as the highly effective 6-2 bench split.
Willemse confirmed that he no longer holds a positional preference, having adapted to the role over the years:
“I’ve been a utility back since 2018, or 2019 when I came into the mix. The coaches have really moulded me into being a utility player in the team, I do it at the club (Stormers) as well.”

Return and Focus on Execution
After missing the entire 2024 international season due to a series of injuries, Willemse expressed his gratitude for being back in the national squad and gaining consistent game time.
“Having a couple of matches back-to-back and getting a groove of things means a lot. It’s a real confidence booster,” he stated. “I’m not really flustered about where I play, as long as I can just get the job done.” His primary focus remains on contributing to the team’s success and securing more Test wins.
The Springboks currently boast an impressive 83% success rate this season, having lost only two of their twelve matches. They aim to maintain this momentum in their upcoming fixtures against Italy, Ireland, and Wales.
