In a definitive win for transformation in South African maritime sports, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) has secured its first-ever podium finish at the University Sport South African (USSA) Sailing Regatta. Competing at the Vaal Dam from December 11–15, 2025, the DUT squad shattered expectations, proving that talent and grit can overcome “generational” advantages.

Shattering the “Underdog” Narrative
The regatta, hosted by Wits University, featured eight elite varsity teams competing in TSL 14 one-design class boats. While institutions like Maties and UCT traditionally dominate the waters, the Durbanites signaled their arrival early with a high-stakes victory over the University of Cape Town in race one.
Key Moments from the Regatta:
- The Struggle: The team initially found the light inland winds of the Vaal Dam challenging, requiring a major tactical “mind shift.”
- The Breakthrough: As the winds picked up to heavy conditions on the final day, DUT thrived, leveraging their training in the rougher Durban waters.
- The Podium Decider: In a high-pressure, best-of-three playoff against TUKS A, DUT clinched the final race to take the bronze medal.
Breaking the “Glass Ceiling” of Sailing
Sailing has historically been a sport with a high barrier to entry, often dominated by families with decades of access to boats and clubs. Coach Gregg Dobson praised the team for earning the respect of these “generational sailors.”
“They achieved this success against a strong field… earning their competitors’ respect. Thanks to DUT and SA Sailing for facilitating access to a sport with a traditionally high barrier to entry.” — Gregg Dobson, DUT Coach
Final Standings:
- Stellenbosch University (Maties) – Gold
- University of Cape Town (Ikeys) – Silver
- Durban University of Technology (DUT) – Bronze
- University of Pretoria (TUKS)
Meet the History-Makers
Led by skipper Minenhle Ngcobo, the DUT team demonstrated incredible synergy and technical skill throughout the five-day event.
- Skipper: Minenhle Ngcobo
- Back-up Helm: Mthobisi Ndovela
- Crew: Sbonga Sibiya, Asiphe Ntozakhe, Lindokuhle Nsibande, and Dale Shandu.
The Next Challenge: After a well-deserved festive break, the team will return to the water for the 50th Anniversary MSC Week in early 2026, where they are already favorites to disrupt the L26 Class rankings.
