While the appetite for a UJ degree has reached record highs, the reality of physical constraints remains. Out of nearly half a million applicants, only 11,200 first-year spots are available, in line with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) enrollment plan.
Key Highlights of the 2026 Intake:
- Facial Recognition Registration: UJ is doubling down on security. All new students will use a facial recognition system for identity verification—a first for South African universities at this scale—replacing manual checks to eliminate fraud and slash registration times.
- The Rise of UJ Digital: To combat campus capacity limits, the university has expanded UJ Digital. The platform now hosts over 80 Short Learning Programmes and 17 fully online accredited degrees in high-demand fields like IT, Engineering, and Law.
- AI-Powered Support: Applicants can now use an AI WhatsApp Chatbot (087 240 6854) for instant updates on fees, accommodation, and application status.
The Waiting List Reality
With tens of thousands of applications for popular courses like Nursing, LLB (Law), and Accounting, many qualifying students find themselves on waiting lists. Admission is strictly ranked by APS (Admission Point Score) and available quotas.
“UJ remains a leading choice for ambitious students… our responsibility is to manage access fairly and efficiently within the national system’s constraints.” — Prof. Letlhokwa George Mpedi, UJ Vice-Chancellor.
