The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) has successfully concluded its 2025/2026 Now@Wits programme, a flagship institutional initiative designed to empower and integrate the university’s newest academic minds. Led by the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Development (CLTD), the 11-month journey wrapped up this February, marking a significant milestone in academic professional development.
The programme supported a diverse cohort of 46 participants from all five faculties, ranging from early-career lecturers to senior academics, ensuring a seamless transition into the Wits community.

Bridging the Gap in Higher Education
In an increasingly complex higher education landscape, Now@Wits provides a structured, theoretical framework for professional learning. By collaborating with various faculties and the Research Office, the initiative focuses on:
- Identity Development: Helping academics define their professional roles.
- Agency and Confidence: Strengthening self-knowledge to navigate institutional challenges.
- Coherence: Aligning the three pillars of academia—research, teaching, and academic citizenship.
A Curriculum for the Modern Witsie
The programme’s curriculum is strategically designed to meet probation requirements while fostering a deeper “reflexive practice.” Key components included:
- Communities of Practice: Specialized sessions on curriculum design, assessment, and the scholarship of teaching.
- Peer-Review Mentoring: A collaborative project that encourages cross-disciplinary support.
- Valedictory Theme: The cycle concluded with a celebration themed “Being and Becoming a Witsie,” focusing on the importance of self- and co-nurturing in the workplace.
“The Now@Wits programme is responsive to the six integrated focus calls within Wits’ Learning and Teaching Strategic Plan.” — Rieta Ganas, Programme Leader at CLTD.
Impact from the Field
For Dr. Matthew Ikuabe from the School of Construction Economics and Management, the programme was instrumental in demystifying the university’s internal frameworks.
“The Now@Wits offered a comprehensive and well-structured induction that significantly deepened my understanding of the institutional culture, governance frameworks, and academic ethos of Wits.” — Dr. Matthew Ikuabe
