Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter opens up about the internal interference and "blurred roles" that ruined his second spell at the club.

The most successful Kaizer Chiefs coach of the last decade has finally broken his silence on why his highly anticipated return to Naturena in 2021 turned into a disaster. Stuart Baxter, the last man to bring a league title to the Soweto giants, has alleged that internal interference and “blurred egos” have crippled the club’s ability to win.

In a candid interview with FARPost, Baxter contrasted the autonomy he enjoyed during his golden era (2012–2015) with the restrictive environment of his second stint.

“I Was Following a Script”: Allegations of Interference

Baxter’s primary grievance centers on a lack of professional boundaries. While his first tenure yielded two league titles in three years, he claims his second spell was undermined by management overstepping into the dressing room.

  • Selection Pressure: Baxter claims he was told which players to field, effectively stripping him of his authority as head coach.
  • Recruitment Sabotage: The Englishman alleges he was given a list of players to buy rather than being allowed to scout according to his tactical needs.
  • Tactical Overreach: Even the team’s formation and tactical setup were reportedly subject to outside “recommendations.”

“The first time the roles were clear. The coach was allowed to do his job. The second time, roles were blurred, egos were involved… it was as if I was expected to follow a script written by others,” Baxter revealed.

Defending the “Sacked” Coaches

Baxter didn’t just speak for himself; he suggested that Amakhosi’s “revolving door” coaching policy is a symptom of a deeper systemic issue. He argued that several of his predecessors were set up to fail by a lack of patience and autonomy.

  • The Sacked Trio: Baxter believes Gavin Hunt, Ernst Middendorp, and even Arthur Zwane would have delivered success if given the same time and independence he enjoyed in 2012.
  • The Identity Crisis: Without a clear line of command, Baxter insists it has become “impossible to build a winning culture” at the club.
