The Free State High Court has struck off an urgent application to stop the 2026 UFS Student Governance Elections. Voting will proceed as scheduled.

The High Court of South Africa (Free State Division) has struck off the roll an urgent application brought by five students attempting to halt the 2026 Student Governance Elections at the University of the Free State (UFS).

The court ruled that the matter lacked urgency and was not properly constituted, making no order as to costs. Following the court’s decision, UFS management confirmed that voting for the Institutional Student Representative Council (ISRC), Campus Student Representative Councils (CSRC), and Faculty Student Structures (FSC) will move forward as scheduled.

Core Highlights & Institutional Position

  • Court Ruling: Application struck off the roll in the Bloemfontein High Court due to a lack of urgency and procedural defects.
  • Election Schedule Unchanged: The 2026 student elections will continue strictly in accordance with the established electoral timetable and institutional rules.
  • Framework Integrity: UFS reaffirmed full confidence in its established electoral mechanisms, governance structures, and internal dispute-resolution channels.
  • Encouraging Student Participation: The University reiterates its commitment to fair, transparent, and orderly elections, urging all eligible students to cast their votes and engage responsibly in campus democracy.
