Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has come under increasing pressure following a series of costly mistakes, but coach Fernando Da Cruz has made it clear that he has no plans to abandon his captain.
Petersen has been at the centre of criticism after three errors this season contributed to dropped points and Chiefs’ early exit from the MTN8. Despite the scrutiny, Da Cruz remains convinced that the experienced goalkeeper can be trusted between the posts.
DA CRUZ REFUSES TO LOSE FAITH IN PETERSEN
Petersen’s difficult run has included costly moments against Golden Arrows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Richards Bay.
Against Golden Arrows in the MTN8, the goalkeeper moved away from his near post, allowing Khulekani Shezi to spot the opportunity and find the net.
He was then caught out against Sundowns after coming off his line to try to punch the ball, misjudging the flight and allowing Cassius Mailula to score.
His latest error came against Richards Bay, when pressure from Nqaba Xulu contributed to Petersen losing control of the situation and Chiefs conceding the opening goal.
With supporters increasingly calling for a change in goal, Da Cruz has instead chosen to back his goalkeeper.
“Brandon also made mistakes last season,” Da Cruz said.
“But he also had a very good season last season. He won a lot of points for this team. I trust him at 100%.”
PETERSEN REMAINS CHIEFS’ CAPTAIN
Da Cruz’s support goes beyond simply keeping Petersen in the starting XI.
The coach highlighted the goalkeeper’s leadership role within the squad, pointing out that Petersen is also the team’s captain.
“He’s our captain. So, I trust him,” Da Cruz added.
The coach did acknowledge that he would speak to Petersen ahead of the weekend, but he insisted that Chiefs would not alter their overall approach because of the goalkeeper’s recent mistakes.
“I will discuss with him about this weekend but our game model will not change. We’ll continue with our normal game,” said Da Cruz.
CAN PETERSEN REBUILD HIS CONFIDENCE?
The decision puts the spotlight firmly on Petersen as Chiefs prepare for their next challenge.
While his recent mistakes have proved costly, Da Cruz believes the goalkeeper’s performances last season demonstrated that he can make a positive contribution and win points for the team.
For Petersen, the challenge now is to repay that faith with consistent performances and restore confidence among the Chiefs faithful.
Da Cruz has made his position clear: Petersen remains trusted, remains captain and, for now, remains the man between the posts.
