Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams has backed Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen to rediscover his best form after a difficult start to the season.

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams has offered words of encouragement to Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen as the shot-stopper battles through a difficult spell of form.

Petersen was one of the standout performers for Chiefs during the 2025/26 campaign, establishing himself as an important figure between the posts.

However, the goalkeeper has faced increased scrutiny this season as the Glamour Boys look to mount a challenge for the Betway Premiership title.

As a fellow goalkeeper and one of South Africa’s leading shot-stoppers, Williams understands the pressure that comes with playing in a position where every mistake can be magnified.

Williams backs Petersen to bounce back

Despite Petersen’s current struggles, Williams believes his performances last season prove that he has the quality to rediscover his best form.

“Brandon Petersen, he was amazing last season, now he’s going through things. But he will reach there again and that’s the nature of the beast,” Williams said.

The Sundowns captain also emphasised the importance of goalkeepers supporting one another, particularly during difficult periods.

Williams believes the position needs to continue developing in South Africa and urged his fellow professionals to keep pushing forward.

“So I’m proud of all the keepers and I always encourage them to keep going. We must keep pushing our position even higher and higher,” he added.

Petersen faces fight to regain his best form

Petersen’s situation will be closely monitored as Chiefs continue their campaign.

While goalkeepers are often judged harshly when results go against their teams, Williams’ message highlights the importance of looking at the bigger picture.

The Chiefs goalkeeper has already shown that he can perform at a high level, and the Sundowns captain clearly believes a difficult run should not define his career.

For Chiefs, the priority will now be helping Petersen regain his confidence while continuing to compete at the top end of the domestic game.

Sundowns prepare for another Golden Arrows test

Meanwhile, Williams and his Sundowns teammates will return to Durban on Sunday, 6 September, to face Golden Arrows at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium.

The fixture comes just seven days after the sides met at the same venue in the MTN8 semi-final second leg.

Sundowns edged Arrows 3-2 in that encounter to book their place in the final on away goals.

The Brazilians will enter Sunday’s Betway Premiership clash with confidence after recording a comfortable 2-0 victory over Milford FC on Wednesday night.

With Sundowns chasing more domestic success, Williams will once again be expected to lead from the back.

Can Brandon Petersen rediscover his best form for Kaizer Chiefs, and do you agree with Ronwen Williams’ assessment?
