Orlando Pirates’ midfield injury crisis has opened the door for several emerging players, while Mohau Nkota’s return adds another attacking option.

What initially looked like a problem for Orlando Pirates may be turning into a major opportunity for some of the club’s emerging talent.

With midfielders Sihle Nduli and Thalente Mbatha still sidelined, several fringe players have been given extended opportunities to show what they can offer in the Bucs engine room.

Cemran Dansin, Thapelo Mokobodi, Simphiwe Selepe and Mthetheleli Mthiyane have all benefited from the situation, picking up valuable minutes as Pirates deal with their injury problems.

Rather than exposing a lack of depth, the situation has highlighted just how many options the champions have within their squad.

Injuries give Pirates youngsters their chance

For Dansin, Mokobodi, Selepe and Mthiyane, the absence of established midfielders represents an opportunity that may not have arrived under normal circumstances.

Regular playing time can be crucial for developing players, particularly at a club competing for major domestic and continental honours.

If Nduli and Mbatha remain unavailable for longer than expected, Pirates could be forced to rely on their emerging midfielders for an extended period.

That could ultimately benefit both the players and the club.

The pressure will be on them to prove that they are more than temporary replacements and can become genuine first-team options.

Nkota return adds another attacking option

Pirates have also received a boost in attack with Mohau Nkota returning to South Africa on loan.

The 21-year-old spent last season in the Saudi Pro League, where he made 21 appearances but recorded only two goals and three assists.

A return to familiar surroundings could give the Bafana Bafana international the opportunity to rebuild his confidence and rediscover his best form.

Nkota will face stiff competition for a place in the wide areas, with Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appollis and Ghampani Lungu also competing for starting opportunities.

With only two wide positions available, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou could have some difficult selection decisions ahead.

Moremi could potentially be used as an impact substitute, although Pirates’ demanding schedule should ensure that there are opportunities for rotation.

Pirates face a busy September

The timing of these squad developments is significant.

Pirates return to continental action with a CAF Champions League qualifying double-header against La Cure Waves FC on 6 and 12 September.

Their next Betway Premiership assignment follows on 16 September, when they face Durban City.

The Sea Robbers have made an excellent start to their title defence, winning four of their opening five league matches and drawing the other.

Mamelodi Sundowns have matched that record, setting the stage for another fascinating battle at the top of the table.

For Pirates, the current injury situation could ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise.

If their emerging players can step up while the established stars recover, the champions may discover even greater depth than they realised they had.

Pirates fans, with Mohau Nkota back and several midfielders pushing for minutes, what would your ideal starting XI look like?
