Could Jeandré Rudolph be an unexpected option for the Springboks?
Former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer believes the Bulls loose forward deserves an opportunity to prove himself at Test level, highlighting his form and specialist work at the breakdown as reasons why he should be on Rassie Erasmus’ radar.
With the Springboks preparing to regroup for their November Tests, Erasmus will once again have to weigh up his options as he builds depth across the squad.
Meyer believes Rudolph could be worth a closer look.
Meyer Praises Rudolph’s Breakdown Work
Rudolph has established himself as a reliable performer for the Bulls since returning from the Cheetahs, and Meyer has been impressed by what he has seen from the experienced loose forward.
The former Springbok coach particularly highlighted Rudolph’s ability to compete for possession at the breakdown — an area that can have a major influence on Test matches.
Meyer believes Rudolph’s versatility is another advantage. The 32-year-old can cover all three loose-forward positions, but it is his specialist openside qualities that stand out most.
His ability to win turnovers and disrupt opposition ball makes him an intriguing option, particularly when the Springboks are looking to build greater depth in the position.
Could Rudolph Earn a Springbok Opportunity?
A call-up would still represent something of a surprise given the depth available to Erasmus.
South Africa have several established loose forwards competing for places, while the versatility of players such as Kwagga Smith has also provided the coaching staff with valuable options.
However, Smith’s current injury absence could potentially create an opening for another experienced player to put his hand up.
Meyer believes Rudolph’s age should not prevent him from receiving an opportunity.
“His current form is excellent. I believe he definitely deserves an opportunity to prove himself at a higher level.”
The argument is not necessarily that Rudolph should immediately displace one of the Springboks’ established loose forwards, but rather that his current form warrants consideration.
World Cup Depth Could Become Crucial
With the next Rugby World Cup cycle already approaching, squad depth is becoming increasingly important for the Springboks.
Meyer believes players such as Rudolph could provide valuable insurance should injuries affect the established loose-forward options.
His experience, versatility and breakdown work could make him a useful addition to a wider Springbok squad, particularly if Erasmus wants to test alternative combinations during the international season.
For now, Rudolph remains a suggestion rather than a confirmed Springbok selection.
But if his form continues, Meyer’s endorsement could put another name into the conversation surrounding South Africa’s loose-forward depth.
The Springboks’ November Challenge
The Springboks are set for a demanding end-of-year campaign, with Tests against Italy, France and Ireland forming part of their November schedule, followed by the Nations Championship Finals Weekend.
Those matches will give Erasmus another opportunity to assess his squad and build towards the bigger challenges ahead.
Whether Rudolph gets the call remains to be seen.
But Meyer’s message is clear: the Bulls loose forward is playing well enough to deserve a closer look.
