The Springboks will head into their November Test campaign without one of their most dangerous attacking weapons, with Cheslin Kolbe ruled out of the end-of-year tour.
Kolbe is continuing his recovery from a broken jaw and will not return to action until December, according to Stormers director of rugby John Dobson.
“He’s not going to make the Springbok tour, but he’s available for us from the start of December,” Dobson confirmed.
The Stormers boss added that Kolbe remains closely involved with the team while recovering and is attending team meetings ahead of his return.
The news is a blow for the Springboks, who will face Italy, France and Ireland during November before playing another fixture on the final weekend of the Nations Championship.
Springboks have wing options despite Kolbe absence
While Kolbe’s pace, creativity and ability to create something from nothing will be missed, South Africa have several options available on the wing.
Ethan Hooker could be given an opportunity, while Canan Moodie and Edwill van der Merwe are also among the players who could feature during the tour.
The Springboks are already monitoring several injury concerns, with World Cup winners Kwagga Smith and RG Snyman among those dealing with longer-term injuries. There are also questions surrounding veteran lock Eben Etzebeth’s availability.
For Kolbe, the immediate priority is completing his recovery before returning to competitive rugby in December.
The Stormers star has also recently opened up about his journey from challenging circumstances to becoming one of South Africa’s most recognisable rugby players.
Speaking on the For the Love of Rugby South Africa podcast, Kolbe discussed his desire to use his experiences to inspire young people facing similar challenges.
“I want to go back there and be a mentor, or inspire the young kids, to show them it doesn’t matter your circumstances or the challenges you’re going through.”
