Orlando Pirates are preparing to begin another CAF Champions League campaign with hopes of finally adding a second continental crown to their trophy cabinet.
The Buccaneers open their campaign next weekend against Mauritian side La Cure Waves in a two-legged first preliminary-round tie.
On paper, Pirates will be favourites to progress. But the real challenge could come in the next round — a stage that proved problematic for the club last season.
Pirates were eliminated in the second preliminary round in 2025/26 after losing on penalties to Saint Eloi Lupopo.
So what could stand between Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team and a deep Champions League run?
1. Goals remain a concern
One of Pirates’ biggest problems so far has been a lack of consistent goals from their strikers.
First-choice forward Yanela Mbuthuma is still searching for his first goal of the campaign, while Boitumelo Radiopane took his opportunity against Sekhukhune United by scoring his first of the season.
Pirates cannot afford to depend almost entirely on midfielders and wingers to provide the goals, particularly when playing away from home in difficult African conditions.
CAF Champions League matches can be decided by the smallest margins, and a lack of cutting edge could prove costly over two legs.
2. Injuries could test the squad
The Buccaneers have already suffered injuries to important players.
The absence of Sihle Nduli and Thalente Mbatha affects the midfield, while Evidence Makgopa’s injury could reduce Ouaddou’s attacking options.
The Champions League will also place additional demands on the squad, with travelling, fixture congestion and intense matches potentially testing Pirates’ depth.
More injuries could force the coach to rotate heavily or depend on less experienced players at crucial moments.
3. Set-piece defending needs improvement
Pirates also need to tighten up when defending corners and other dead-ball situations.
Set pieces can be particularly dangerous in continental football, where matches are often tight and open-play opportunities can be limited.
A momentary lapse in concentration from a corner or free-kick could be enough to change the outcome of a two-legged tie.
Pirates will therefore need to improve their organisation, marking and concentration whenever they defend set pieces.
Can Pirates finally find the winning formula?
The Buccaneers have the quality and experience to make a serious run in the CAF Champions League.
However, their finishing, squad fitness and defensive organisation could determine whether they go deep into the competition or suffer another disappointing early exit.
If Ouaddou can address those three areas, Pirates could become a serious contender.
