Mamelodi Sundowns have moved to the top of the Betway Premiership table after a dramatic victory over Golden Arrows, but Orlando Pirates remain firmly in the title conversation with a game in hand.
The early-season title race is already beginning to take shape, with Sundowns, Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu occupying the top four positions.
Sundowns’ 3-2 victory over Golden Arrows in Durban on Sunday proved crucial, allowing Masandawana to leapfrog defending champions Orlando Pirates and take control of the summit.
Sundowns Snatch Victory at the Death
Golden Arrows pushed Sundowns all the way, but the 15-time league champions eventually found a way to claim maximum points.
Siyanda Ndlovu opened the scoring in the 14th minute after being set up by Tashreeq Matthews.
Arrows refused to surrender, however, and Sede Junior Dion restored parity with 14 minutes remaining.
Just when the match appeared destined to finish level, Teboho Mokoena produced the decisive moment in the 88th minute to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory.
The result moved Sundowns to the top of the table and ensured they maintained their unbeaten start.
Masandawana will now look to strengthen their position when they face Siwelele FC at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.
Pirates Still Have a Major Advantage
Despite dropping to second, Orlando Pirates remain one of the strongest contenders for the title.
The defending champions have a game in hand and boast an impressive +11 goal difference, underlining just how efficiently they have started the campaign.
That additional fixture could prove extremely important as the season develops.
Pirates will, however, have to wait before returning to league action because of their CAF Champions League commitments.
Their next Betway Premiership fixture is scheduled for 17 September, when they host Durban City at Orlando Stadium.
Chiefs Move Back Into Third
Kaizer Chiefs have also strengthened their position in the early title race.
The Amakhosi climbed back into third after an entertaining 3-2 victory over Siwelele FC in Johannesburg.
Mfundo Vilakazi and Wandile Duba put Chiefs in control before Siwelele fought back.
Chiefs eventually held on for three important points, keeping themselves within touching distance of the teams above them.
The victory was valuable, although conceding twice after establishing a strong position will give the coaching staff plenty to consider.
Chiefs’ next assignment comes against Polokwane City on 12 September.
AmaZulu Lurking in Fourth
AmaZulu have quietly moved into the top four after beating Richards Bay 2-1.
Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya gave AmaZulu the lead before Moses Mthembu levelled the contest late in the second half.
Nkosikhona Radebe then struck the winner to give AmaZulu another important three points.
The result leaves AmaZulu just one point behind Chiefs.
Their biggest concern at this stage could be their +1 goal difference, particularly with the teams around them capable of producing bigger victories.
The PSL Title Race Is Already Heating Up
With the season still in its early stages, there is little separating the leading contenders.
Sundowns currently have the advantage at the summit, but Pirates’ game in hand means the champions remain a serious threat.
Chiefs are also beginning to show signs of consistency, while AmaZulu have positioned themselves as an early challenger.
The next few rounds could therefore have a major impact on the shape of the table.
Sundowns have the lead. Pirates have a game in hand. Chiefs are closing the gap. AmaZulu are waiting in the wings.
The big question is: which club will still be leading the title race when the pressure really starts to build?
