Mzukulu and Blxckie have joined forces for “Too Much,” an unexpected collaboration that brings the traditional sound of Maskandi into the world of contemporary South African hip-hop.
The new single serves as the opening track for Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, an ambitious compilation created to explore the evolution of Maskandi while remaining rooted in the genre’s cultural identity and musical traditions.
Mzukulu Meets Blxckie
“Too Much” blends Mzukulu’s soulful vocal style with Blxckie’s melodic hip-hop approach, creating a sound that bridges two generations and musical cultures.
The production retains the unmistakable character of Maskandi through its guitar-driven foundation, while Spanish guitar touches and a smooth saxophone melody add a contemporary layer to the track.
At its heart, the song is a celebration of overwhelming love.
The concept of kuningi — having so much love that it becomes difficult to measure or explain — runs throughout the track. The lyrics even reference the scale of FNB Stadium and Moses Mabhida Stadium to illustrate just how enormous those emotions can feel.
Rather than forcing the two genres together, “Too Much” allows Maskandi storytelling and modern hip-hop influences to complement one another naturally.
A New Chapter for Maskandi
The collaboration is also the first glimpse into the wider vision behind Digital Maskandi Vol. 1.
The project was developed by Ntuthuko Mtshali in partnership with Durban Media House and Africori Music Group, bringing together established Maskandi artists and musicians from different corners of South Africa’s music scene.
The compilation features names such as Dr Buselaphi, Saliwa, Jaiva Zimnike and Menzi, alongside artists from hip-hop, Afro-soul and other genres.
Sjava and Lowfeye of The Qwellers are also among the contributors, further highlighting the project’s aim of creating connections between artists who traditionally operate in different musical spaces.
Mzukulu and Blxckie Bring Different Worlds Together
For Mzukulu, the release arrives during an important stage of his career following his recognition as the SAMA Best Male Artist of the Year.
His work has continued to help introduce Maskandi to broader audiences, while Blxckie is entering a new phase of his career as an independent artist following his departure from Def Jam.
That makes “Too Much” more than simply an unusual collaboration.
It represents an attempt to show how Maskandi can evolve without losing the guitar-led sound, storytelling and cultural character that define the genre.
