Cassius Mailula has opened up about his difficult spell in Belgium, explaining that he believes a lack of a clear plan and consistent opportunities contributed to his struggles at KV Kortrijk.
The Mamelodi Sundowns attacker returned to the Premier Soccer League after spending the past three years playing abroad. His European journey included a loan move to Kortrijk from Toronto FC, but the forward found it difficult to secure regular game time.
Speaking to Andile Ncube on Metro FM, Mailula suggested that the right environment and a clear understanding of how a club intends to use a player can make a significant difference.
“From my perspective, I think it’s a matter of a club having a plan around you,” Mailula said.
The 25-year-old explained that clubs should understand a player’s strengths before signing them and then create an environment where those qualities can be used effectively.
“For me it’s about that also — if you use me, use me to my strength. That’s it. The rest, you can never doubt the talent.”
For Mailula, the biggest issue was having the opportunity to prove himself.
“It was just the matter of getting that opportunity and for me to grab it.”
Mailula turns frustration into Sundowns form
The Belgian experience was understandably disappointing for Mailula, particularly because of his desire to establish himself abroad.
“Of course [I was sad], every player wants to do well,” he said.
“When you are in an environment where this is what you’ve always wanted, you want to show the world that and give the club that brought you there something.”
However, Mailula’s return to South Africa has provided an opportunity to reset his career.
Since returning to Mamelodi Sundowns, the attacker has made an immediate impact and has already found the net three times this season.
His performances have also earned him a return to the Bafana Bafana setup, with new head coach Pitso Mosimane recalling him for the squad preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
After a frustrating chapter in Europe, Mailula now has the chance to rebuild his momentum at Sundowns and demonstrate why he was once regarded as one of South Africa’s promising attacking talents.
