Stellenbosch FC have confirmed the return of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke, with the player rejoining the club for a second spell.
Matsheke previously featured for the Maroons during the 2023/24 campaign and was part of the squad that lifted the Carling Knockout trophy.
His biggest moment came in the final against TS Galaxy, when he converted the decisive penalty as Stellenbosch claimed the silverware following a shootout. Overall, Matsheke made 12 appearances across all competitions during his first stint.
MATSHEKE’S ROAD BACK TO THE MAROONS
The Soweto-born midfielder came through the Kaizer Chiefs development system and was promoted to the senior squad during the 2020/21 season.
He subsequently gained experience through loan moves to Uthongathi FC and Moroka Swallows before leaving Chiefs permanently.
Matsheke joined Stellenbosch as a free agent in October 2023 and quickly became part of a squad that enjoyed cup success.
His first spell, however, ended in March 2024 when Stellenbosch terminated his contract following an internal code of conduct matter.
The midfielder then continued his career away from the top flight, spending time with Pretoria Callies and Kruger United before returning to the Betway Premiership with Marumo Gallants during the 2025/26 season.
His stay at Gallants was ultimately brief, with the player and club agreeing to part ways after he fell outside the head coach’s long-term plans.
Now Matsheke is back in Stellenbosch with an opportunity to restart his top-flight career.
A SECOND CHANCE AT STELLENBOSCH
Matsheke revealed that his return came unexpectedly, but said he was delighted to have another opportunity with the club.
The midfielder is determined to build on what he achieved during his first spell and help Stellenbosch compete for further honours.
He also sees the move as a chance to revisit ambitions that were left unfulfilled during his previous stint, including the opportunity to compete in African club football.
Matsheke will wear the No. 31 shirt this season and could make his second Stellenbosch debut against Kruger United in the Betway Premiership this weekend.
For the midfielder, the return represents more than simply a familiar move — it is another opportunity to make his mark at the highest level of South African football.
