Social media has once again put DJ Maphorisa’s background under the spotlight, with circulating posts questioning whether the acclaimed producer and DJ is genuinely South African because of his Nigerian heritage.
DJ Maphorisa, whose real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, was born in Soshanguve, Pretoria, in 1987. Published biographical accounts identify him as South African and report that his father is Nigerian while his mother is South African.
That family background appears to be at the centre of the latest online discussion.
However, claims about nationality and citizenship should not be reduced to a person’s ancestry alone. South African government guidance states that citizenship by birth depends on circumstances including whether at least one parent was a South African citizen or permanent resident at the time of birth.
Nigerian heritage does not erase South African roots
Maphorisa’s Nigerian heritage is part of his family history, but his career and upbringing have been deeply connected to South Africa.
He grew up in Soshanguve and developed his musical interests in the township before becoming one of the country’s most internationally recognised producers. An earlier interview with Sunday Times described his childhood surrounded by gospel music and musical instruments, while News24 also documented his beginnings in Soshanguve.
His career has subsequently crossed borders, with collaborations involving artists from South Africa, Nigeria and other parts of Africa. He was also involved in the production of Drake’s global hit “One Dance”, further establishing his influence beyond the South African music industry.
Why does his ancestry matter to the music?
The renewed debate raises a broader question about how African artists are viewed when their family backgrounds cross national borders.
South Africa’s music industry has always been influenced by cultural exchange across the continent. Amapiano itself has developed from South African musical traditions while increasingly reaching audiences and artists across Africa and internationally.
For Maphorisa, his Nigerian heritage and South African upbringing can exist alongside each other without necessarily being contradictory.
His ancestry also does not change the body of work that made him one of the prominent figures in South African and African popular music.
Whether listeners enjoy his music is ultimately a matter of personal taste, but questions about heritage should be separated from claims about citizenship and from judgments about an artist’s contribution to music.
