Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has responded to criticism from former club figures over his approach to coaching the Buccaneers.
The Moroccan tactician has come under scrutiny in recent weeks after publicly challenging his players over their tendency to prioritise showboating and individual flair. Ouaddou has stressed that his main focus is efficiency, discipline and results.
Some former Pirates figures have questioned whether the coach should place greater emphasis on allowing players to express themselves on the pitch.
Ouaddou, however, insists he respects the club’s history and South African football culture while making it clear that he has a specific mandate at Pirates.
“I am here for a mandate. I am here to get results. I am here to take the best for my team and to win games,” Ouaddou said, according to iDiski Times.
Ouaddou draws line between skill and entertainment
The Pirates coach believes there is an important distinction between using individual ability effectively and simply entertaining the crowd.
“There is difference between skills to play forward, to score goals, to be efficient, and entertainment,” he said.
For Ouaddou, the priority is ensuring that individual skills contribute to the team’s overall performance.
He also called on former Pirates figures to support the current team rather than publicly questioning the coaching approach.
According to the coach, criticism from former players and coaches can become unhelpful if it creates unnecessary noise around the squad.
Pirates legends invited to training
Rather than continuing the debate from a distance, Ouaddou issued a direct invitation to the former Pirates figures who have criticised his methods.
The coach said they are welcome to attend training and experience his approach first-hand.
“They can come to have one week of training. I’m happy to see what they are going to do.”
Ouaddou took the challenge a step further, joking that he would even hand them the whistle and a Pirates tracksuit so they could take charge from the technical area.
“I give them the whistle. I can give them the tracksuit and come on the bench, and we are going to see if it’s easy for them.”
The comments add another layer to an ongoing discussion about the balance between individual flair and tactical discipline at Orlando Pirates.
With the pressure to deliver results continuing, Ouaddou appears determined to ensure that his players understand exactly what he expects from them.
