Bafana Bafana are heading into a demanding international window, with Pitso Mosimane’s team scheduled to play three matches in just nine days.
South Africa will begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Guinea before travelling to Egypt for a clash with Eritrea and then a high-profile friendly against the Pharaohs.
The packed schedule will test not only Bafana’s quality but also the depth of Mosimane’s 30-man squad.
Guinea provide first test
Bafana’s busy run begins on Saturday, 26 September, when South Africa host Guinea at Orlando Amstel Arena in Johannesburg.
The fixture will open Bafana’s Group D AFCON qualifying campaign and represents the start of Mosimane’s second full stint in charge of the national team.
South Africa and Guinea have met three times previously, with Bafana recording one victory, one draw and one defeat.
Their most recent encounter ended in a 2-1 South African victory at the 2025 African Nations Championship.
Experienced players such as Teboho Mokoena and Themba Zwane could play important roles as Mosimane looks to start the qualification campaign strongly.
But there will be little time to celebrate or recover.
Eritrea four days later
Just four days after facing Guinea, Bafana will take on Eritrea on Wednesday, 30 September.
Although South Africa are listed as the away side, the match will be played at Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo, with Eritrea currently unable to host international matches at a venue meeting the required standards.
The encounter will also mark the first official international meeting between South Africa and Eritrea.
For Mosimane, managing the short turnaround will be crucial. Travel, recovery and player rotation will all become important factors as Bafana attempt to maintain their performance levels.
Egypt brings the nine-day schedule to an end
Bafana’s hectic window concludes on Sunday, 4 October, when they face Egypt at the Cairo International Stadium.
South Africa have historically enjoyed a competitive record against the Pharaohs, winning eight of their 15 previous meetings, alongside two draws and five defeats.
However, Egypt claimed a 1-0 victory in the teams’ most recent competitive meeting at the 2025 AFCON.
The Egypt fixture will therefore provide a different challenge from the two AFCON qualifiers, giving Mosimane an opportunity to assess his squad against one of the continent’s leading national teams.
A major test of squad depth
Three matches in nine days will leave little room for error.
Mosimane will have to balance qualification ambitions with player workload while managing travel between Johannesburg and Cairo.
The international window could therefore reveal plenty about Bafana’s squad depth — and how quickly the team can adapt under their returning coach.
