Pitso Mosimane has explained his decision to include veteran midfielder Themba Zwane in the latest Bafana Bafana squad, despite admitting that the 37-year-old is not currently in the physical condition to displace Oswin Appollis from the starting lineup.
Zwane’s selection raised eyebrows after the Mamelodi Sundowns star failed to start a single match for his club at the beginning of the new season.
The veteran was also part of South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, although his tournament was cut short after he received a straight red card shortly after coming on against Mexico in the opening match on 11 June.
Mosimane backs Zwane’s experience
With some expecting Zwane’s international career to have reached its conclusion, Mosimane has opted to retain the experienced attacker in his plans.
The Bafana coach believes Zwane can offer more than his performances on the pitch, pointing to his experience, leadership and understanding of what it takes to operate at international level.
“Experience, leadership. Let him tell Puso what it is like to play for Bafana. What is expected to stay at the highest level, and patience also,” Mosimane told the media.
Mosimane also believes Zwane can have an impact late in matches, particularly during the final stages when his experience and composure could prove valuable.
Appollis currently ahead of Zwane
While Mosimane remains confident in Zwane’s contribution, he was candid about the veteran’s current physical condition.
The Bafana mentor acknowledged that Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis is currently ahead of Zwane when it comes to being ready to start.
“The last 10, 15 minutes, he’s got that aura, combining things, but you know guys… he’s not in a very good physical condition to be playing ahead of Appollis, let’s be honest,” Mosimane said.
That suggests Zwane’s immediate role could be as an impact substitute rather than a regular starter.
His ability to influence matches during the final 10 to 15 minutes could nevertheless make him an important option for Mosimane.
Zwane also in leadership plans
Beyond his playing role, Zwane could also have responsibilities within the Bafana leadership group.
Mosimane indicated that the captaincy will rotate, with Zwane among the players being considered for the armband.
That gives the experienced attacker another way to contribute to the national team, particularly as Mosimane looks to combine established figures with younger players in the squad.
Bafana prepare for AFCON qualifying campaign
South Africa’s next assignment comes against Guinea in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday, 26 September.
The match is scheduled for a 15:00 kick-off at Orlando Amstel Arena.
Bafana will then travel to Egypt to face Eritrea on 30 September, before taking on Egypt in an international friendly on 4 October.
For Mosimane, Zwane’s experience could prove useful as South Africa begin another international campaign — even if the veteran’s current physical condition means Appollis remains ahead of him for a starting role.
