The Premier Soccer League has only just begun its 2026/27 campaign, but several players have already made a strong case for early Player of the Season honours.
With the league paused for the September-October international break, the timing offers a chance to assess the standout performers so far.
Among the leading names are AmaZulu goal machine Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, Mamelodi Sundowns forward Brayan Leon and Pirates playmaker Oswin Appollis.
But with the season still in its early stages, the race remains wide open.
Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya: The early scoring sensation
If goals are the main measure, AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has a compelling case.
The Zimbabwean forward leads the PSL scoring charts with eight goals and has found the net in every league appearance this season.
His consistency has been crucial to AmaZulu’s impressive start, with Usuthu sitting third in the standings and within reach of Orlando Pirates.
Ngwenya was also named the league’s Player of the Month for August after scoring five times in four matches.
His performances are a reminder that current form can matter just as much as reputation or market value when assessing the league’s leading players.
Sipho Chaine: The man behind Pirates’ defensive record
At the opposite end of the pitch, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has been equally influential.
Pirates have conceded just once in the league so far, giving Chaine a major role in what is currently the division’s standout defensive record.
Interestingly, AmaZulu are the only side to have breached the Pirates defence, with Ngwenya scoring in the match that ended in a draw.
Chaine’s form has also been recognised at international level. The goalkeeper was included in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming fixtures against Guinea and Eritrea, as well as the friendly against Egypt.
Brayan Leon: Sundowns’ Colombian threat
Mamelodi Sundowns forward Brayan Leon has also caught the eye during his first full season with the club.
The Colombian attacker won the August Goal of the Month award and has scored three times so far.
Sundowns currently sit at the top of the PSL table, and Leon’s performances have added another attacking dimension to the defending league champions.
The expectation, however, will be for the 25-year-old to become even more productive in front of goal as the campaign progresses.
Oswin Appollis among the contenders
Orlando Pirates playmaker Oswin Appollis is another name worth watching.
The attacker has contributed two goals and two assists and remains one of the league’s most highly valued players.
With Pirates competing near the top of the table, Appollis could strengthen his Player of the Season case if his attacking numbers continue to rise.
Other players making an early impact
There are several other performers who deserve recognition.
TS Galaxy striker Victor Letsoalo has scored four goals despite his team’s difficult start, while Richards Bay forward Nqaba Xulu has surprisingly found the net five times with his side currently near the bottom of the table.
Their individual numbers highlight an important point: outstanding performances are not always reflected by a team’s position in the standings.
The PSL MVP race is still wide open
At this stage, Ngwenya, Chaine, Leon and Appollis have all produced performances that put them firmly into the early conversation.
But there is a long way to go before the Player of the Season award is decided.
The next few months could completely change the picture as players face more fixtures, increased pressure and tougher competition.
